New Website Aims to Change Pit Bulls' "Bad Rap"

At SmallPond not only do we love design, we love animal rescue groups. Recently, we got the lucky chance to combine both and create a new website for BAD RAP, the national pit bull rescue organization made famous by its role in the rescue and rehabilitation of the “Michael Vick dogs."

Director Donna Reynolds first approached us about building their new website after seeing the site we built for the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (www.hstt.org). Artists by trade, Donna and her husband, Tim, had a vision of a "sophisticated, mature, artsy" site that not only provided valuable information, but paid homage to the breed's rich history. To that end, they found a vintage story book barn scene for the site's background, representing the fact that pit bulls were once common farm dogs, and suggesting the group's rescue barn in the Oakland hills.

At first we weren't too sure about what to make of the farm scene background, but now we've grown to love it and think the beautiful image makes the site rich, interesting, and unique. Check it out and let us know what you think! www.badrap.org

National Pit Bull Rescue Organization BADRAP Launches New Website
New site features pit bull education and resources for rescue groups and owners nationwide,
online donation tools, and capability for staff to make updates

The Oakland, Calif.-based nonprofit BADRAP has launched a new website in an effort to expand its mission of securing the future of the American pit bull terrier as a cherished family companion.

The new website, www.badrap.org, features extensive info on pit bulls, training videos, current adoptable pets, past adoption success stories, donation and online store tools, volunteer information and the ability for BADRAP staff to easily update the website.

A generous donation from software company Zynga enabled BADRAP to retire their previous 12-year-old website and, as Director Donna Reynolds said to the organization’s supporters, build a “brand new website designed to help you help the dogs.”

The new site was developed by Truckee, Calif.-based graphic design and web development firm SmallPond Studio. Built as a content management system, it is designed to be flexible, affordable and easy to use, while saving the organization valuable operational dollars that will go toward funding other aspects of their mission. Staff can make updates in all sections of the website, from basic text and image changes to adding new calendar events, updating available dogs and posting new training videos.

BADRAP, made famous by its role in the rescue and rehabilitation of the “Michael Vick dogs,” was formed in 1999 to tackle the difficult issues facing San Francisco Bay Area pit bull-type dogs. The organization has become a nationally recognized resource for both dog owners and shelters, offering desirable pets for adopters, training classes for dog owners and presentations and professional consultations to animal welfare leaders around the country.
